1. Alberta on pace for the most traffic deaths in a decade. RCMP recorded 192 traffic deaths on RCMP-patrolled roads between Jan. 1 and Aug. 31, 2026, up from 144 in the same period in 2025; Alberta RCMP said June was the only month with fewer-than-normal fatalities and warned 2026 could end at a 10-year high if trends continue.

Most provinces now ban phones for elementary students and allow limited high-school use in eight jurisdictions, Quebec bans phones for all students, and ministers report fewer students using phones — Nova Scotia’s education minister said about seven per cent of students were still found using phones during class.
