🚑 Breaking & Incidents

1. Two hikers found dead in Banff National Park after separate incidents last week. RCMP say a 24-year-old guide was found dead near Recondite Peak on Wednesday after his satellite tracker stopped, and a 33-year-old Calgary man was found dead Saturday near Beehive Mountain; both deaths were discovered by Parks Canada and RCMP search teams.
2. Alberta will publish air-quality data on smoke from the week-long ECCO Recycling landfill fire. The fire at ECCO Recycling near southern Calgary has been smouldering for more than a week, Calgary fire crews are smothering material with dirt and water, and Environment Minister Grant Hunter’s office says the province will release detailed readings as soon as possible.

1. Treaty 6 band members express mixed feelings about Alberta’s referendum at a 150th-anniversary gathering. The discussion came during Treaty 6 anniversary events where leaders and members debated the province’s Oct. 19 referendum question about whether Alberta should stay in Canada or hold a second binding referendum to quit the country.
2. Calgary-Shaw byelection underway Monday with five candidates on the ballot. The riding is vacant since Rebecca Schulz’s May resignation; candidates include UCP’s Mike Derry and NDP’s Kyle Campbell, polls open 9 a.m. and close 8 p.m., and the byelection coincides with province-wide debate over an Oct. 19 referendum.

1. Alberta’s ASIRT called after officers fatally shot a 36-year-old man in west Edmonton. Edmonton Police responded around 10 a.m. Sunday to a home near Donsdale Drive and 45 Avenue where a woman and an infant were reported shot; police say three officers fired after the 36-year-old opened the door with a firearm, the man was arrested and died at the scene, and two women plus an infant were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
2. Chinatown business leaders say corrections vans have been unloading people late at night near 99 Street and 107 Avenue. Surveillance footage obtained by community leaders shows a corrections transport van near Kim Fat Market shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, and interim Chinatown Business Association director Kathryn Luu says the corrections officer drove off without answering questions about the releases.

1. Flair Airlines receives a $76-million federal bailout to cover soaring fuel costs. The Ottawa loan of $76 million to Flair was announced as the airline faces elevated fuel expenses; the funding is intended to keep the carrier operating while fuel markets remain high.
2. TC Energy urges cooperation to expand Alberta’s gas network to meet projected demand. The company described future gas needs as "generational" and called for coordinated planning among industry and governments to build out pipeline and network capacity across Alberta.
