🚑 Breaking & Incidents

1. One person died after a canoe capsized on Stewart Lake; a second was rescued. Ontario Provincial Police in Bracebridge say they responded shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday to a report that a canoe overturned about 40 feet from shore in Georgian Bay Township; searchers recovered the body of a 31-year-old from Mississauga on Sunday. The Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service are involved and the investigation is ongoing. ↗

2. Motorcycle rider, 52, died after head-on collision on Muskoka Road 169. OPP say the crash occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. near East Black Lake Road in the Township of Muskoka Lakes; paramedics and bystanders attempted lifesaving efforts but the 52-year-old from Lake of Bays was pronounced dead. The driver of the passenger vehicle has been charged with dangerous operation causing death and is due at Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge for a bail hearing. ↗

🚨 Crime & Public Safety

1. SIU investigating after person fatally shot during Brockville search warrant. Brockville Police and OPP East Region Tactics and Rescue Unit executed a search warrant at about 8 p.m. on Thursday, police say; one person was taken to hospital and pronounced dead. The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate and the OPP said it will not provide further details while the SIU investigates. ↗

2. Three people charged in firearms probe tied to a Toronto police shooting investigation. Toronto police say a 23-year-old, a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old face 42 charges including occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm and careless handling; the charges follow a Mercedes pursuit that ended with an officer firing and a 19-year-old driver killed at the scene. The SIU reported five unmarked police vehicles were involved in the operation and two guns were recovered. ↗

3. Two 18-year-olds charged with 37 counts, including first-degree murder, in Salsa on St. Clair shooting. Toronto police say the arrests follow the July 11 street-festival shooting that left two people dead and five others hospitalized; about 13,000 people had attended the festival. Investigators reviewed hundreds of hours of video and interviewed witnesses as part of the probe, police said. ↗

4. RCMP seize more than $4.5 million worth of cocaine, three charged. Mounties say the investigation uncovered a large-scale trafficking operation across the Golden Horseshoe and led to a July 8 search of a Toronto condominium where two men were arrested; a third man was arrested nearby. Police also executed warrants in Hamilton and seized about $165,000 in cash and jewelry believed to be proceeds of crime. ↗

5. Peel police recover nearly $800,000 in stolen trucks and computer equipment in Brampton. Investigators located four stolen commercial vehicles and trailers near Heart Lake Road and Countryside Drive on July 22 and found two shipments of computer equipment valued at more than $680,000; trailers are valued at about $105,000. No suspects have been identified, Peel Regional Police said. ↗

6. Dump truck driver charged with impaired driving after swerving into oncoming traffic in Wellington County. OPP say they received complaints about a fully loaded gravel dump truck crossing the centre line near Queen Street in Puslinch Township around 1:15 p.m. Thursday; officers charged a 27-year-old Brampton man with operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration of 80 mg or more. The driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the truck impounded for seven days; the accused is due in court Sept. 18. ↗

7. Ride operator charged with sexual assault and sexual interference after alleged incident at Vaughan amusement park. York Regional Police allege the assault occurred in late May while the girl boarded a ride and a 19-year-old Brampton man has been charged; investigators say they believe there may be other victims and are asking anyone with information to come forward. ↗

🎨 Community & Culture

1. Brockville Aquatarium welcomes three locally born otter pups; total otter group now eight. Curator Liz Harder says Mayble gave birth to three pups who are about five months old and remain reliant on their mother for several more months; the Aquatarium took in five rescued North American river otters from Louisiana in earlier years. The pups are drawing visitors and will remain under close care as they mature. ↗

2. Mother cat and six newborn kittens found sheltering beneath an OPP cruiser in North Bay. OPP say the animals were discovered on July 28 tucked inside a vehicle component beneath the police vehicle; Pet Save, PAWS and the Ontario SPCA assisted and the seven animals were taken into care. The SPCA reported all seven are in good health and expected to be available for adoption in coming months. ↗

3. Conservative MP Larry Brock to resign Sept. 18 to return to Crown prosecution in Brantford. Brock, MP for Brantford–Brant South–Six Nations, announced in a social media post that he will vacate his seat to resume work at the Brantford Crown attorney’s office and said his departure triggers a byelection in the southwestern Ontario riding. Brock was first elected in 2021 and had served as the party’s justice critic before a June reshuffle. ↗

4. Nathan Rourke returned and passed for 370 yards as the B.C. Lions beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 27-24. Rourke missed two games with a left shoulder injury and completed 22 of 39 attempts, throwing touchdown passes to Zander Horvath and Justin McInnis; Sean Whyte’s 24-yard field goal with 28 seconds left sealed the win. B.C. improved to 3-5 while Hamilton fell to 3-6. ↗

🌦️ Weather & Roads

1. Two EF0 tornadoes confirmed in southwestern Ontario near Lindsay and Woodstock. The Northern Tornadoes Project said the Lindsay and Woodstock twisters were preliminarily rated EF0 with estimated winds of 65–85 km/h; both showed only minor reported damage and the project did not plan immediate survey teams. Environment Canada issued tornado warnings for the Woodstock area citing damaging winds, large hail and intense rainfall. ↗

2. Township of Southwold declares state of emergency after heavy rain and flooding. Officials said Friday that multiple roads were closed and named affected routes including Burwell Road, McDiarmid Line and Oneida Road; emergency remediation began with crews deployed at 6 a.m. Saturday and full restorations could take up to two weeks. The township asked residents with basement flooding to place damaged items at the roadside for pickup details to be released Monday. ↗
