🚑 Breaking & Incidents

1. Regimental funeral held in Edmonton for correctional officer Nicolae Serban. About 200 people attended Serban’s funeral Saturday; he died in an early-August crash while transporting an inmate from the Edmonton Institute for Women, and his colleague Ramandeep Kaur Maan and inmate Keira Mooswa also died in that collision. The regimental funeral for Maan is scheduled for Sunday.
2. Edmonton Marathon course found longer than regulation after race. Race officials confirmed the full marathon course was 674.7 metres too long following Sunday’s event, despite more than 10,000 registrants; the Boston Athletic Association said official, unadjusted results may still be accepted for Boston qualification for runners who met standards.

1. 16-year-old charged with second-degree murder in north Edmonton shooting. Edmonton police say officers responded to a shooting Aug. 16 near 139 Avenue and 32 Street; a 16-year-old girl was found with a gunshot wound and later pronounced dead, and a 16-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder after an autopsy confirmed a fatal gunshot wound.
2. Two men stabbed during morning prayers at Nanaksar gurdwara in northeast Edmonton. Temple leaders said a white male attacker entered the Nanaksar gurdwara on Manning Drive during morning prayers ahead of a wedding and stabbed two elderly men; congregants subdued the suspect and police were called, with the injured believed to be in stable condition.

1. City of Edmonton reviewing return of calcium chloride for winter road anti-icing. The city’s snow and ice policy report notes staff will examine calcium chloride’s pros and cons after councillor motions; Edmonton piloted the compound in 2017–18 but stopped in 2019 amid concerns about vehicle and infrastructure corrosion.
2. 150th anniversary Treaty 6 commemoration planned at Fort Carlton.
