- Bald Range wildfire grows past 22,000 hectares with strong overnight winds. BC Wildfire reports the fire near Summerland and Peachland now exceeds 22,000 hectares; crews conducted planned ignitions and will move helicopter operations from Summerland to Penticton Airport by Aug. 21.
- Summerland businesses remain closed under a water boil advisory after the Bald Range fire. Zias Stonehouse Restaurant and other Summerland shops say lack of treated water is preventing reopening during peak tourist season, Mayor Doug Holmes said small businesses are “decimated.”
- Small plane made an emergency landing on Foothills Boulevard in Prince George; road closed. Prince George Fire and Rescue Services are responding to a “serious motor vehicle incident” at Foothills Boulevard and Highland Drive and the roadway will be closed for several hours.
🚨 Crime & Public Safety
- High-risk sex offender Michael Wayne Carpenter arrested again in Langley, now facing new charges. Carpenter, subject to a long-term supervision order, was charged with trespassing, break and enter and obstruction after incidents on Aug. 12 and Aug. 17; he remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
- Three men arrested in B.C. may face U.S. extradition in alleged cross-border drug trafficking case. Gurtej Smagh, Jaskarn Baghri and Ravinder Dhanda were arrested last month; B.C. Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth McDonald called a Canadian trial request “speculative at this point” and lifted a publication ban on bail-hearing evidence.
- Vancouver police are probing whether Amsterdam’s “Lucky” is Vancouver man John Russell Kenny. Vancouver Police said their missing persons unit is collaborating with Amsterdam police and INTERPOL to determine if “Lucky,” found in Amsterdam in May 2023, is the long‑missing Vancouver man.

- Advance voting opens Friday for three federal byelections, including North Vancouver–Capilano. Byelections Aug. 31 follow resignations and appointments; Jonathan Wilkinson’s North Vancouver–Capilano seat is among the three ridings voting.
- Domtar is ‘indefinitely curtailing’ its Howe Sound pulp mill, affecting 350 workers. B.C. Forests Minister Ravi Parmar said the curtailment reflects historic low pulp prices and the government will engage with Sunshine Coast leaders and labour to seek solutions.
