- Overnight fire at Sherwood Park home is latest in long-running neighbour complaints. Flames were seen coming from 58 Glengarry Crescent around 2 a.m. Sunday; Strathcona County says fire investigators and the RCMP are probing the blaze and accelerant-detection dogs were used on scene. Neighbours told Global News the house has drawn frequent police attention for nearly a year and Alberta Health Services declared it unfit for habitation in November 2025.
- Calgary officer shot twice in park has been released from hospital. Police say the officer was shot during a confrontation in Edworthy Park and has been discharged; the suspect, described by police as an organized crime figure, died of a self-inflicted gunshot and was later found floating in the Bow River. Alberta’s police watchdog was sent to the scene and is investigating the suspect’s death.

- City council reviews new rules for e-scooters and e-bikes after safety and parking complaints. A staff report says micromobility trips in Edmonton nearly tripled to more than 1.4 million trips last year since the 2019 launch; councillors heard residents — including part-time wheelchair users like Kyrie Herman — report blocked sidewalks and tipping scooters that impede mobility. Staff are studying regulatory changes to address parking and ride behaviour.
- Environment Canada launches targeted polygon-based extreme-weather alerts. Starting Tuesday, forecasters can draw polygons to warn only affected areas instead of whole zones, which meteorologist Giselle Dookhie says will reduce “alert fatigue.” Global News meteorologist Anthony Farnell and Environment Canada say the system will be used initially for thunderstorms and tornadoes.

- ArtsCommon 118 secures land, bringing $10.4M arts hub closer in Alberta Avenue. Arts on the Ave has acquired the vacant lot at 9131 118 Ave.; the project’s price tag is $10.4 million and the City of Edmonton has already committed $3.3 million. ArtsCommon 118 aims to provide live-work and performance space for artists after prior attempts stalled over two decades at City Hall.
- Protesters plan to attend Sturgeon County town hall on AI data centres on Aug. 20. Organizer Ben Baril says he and others will tell the province to halt proposed data centres, including Meta’s planned facility in Sturgeon County; the provincial town halls are hosted by Technology Minister Nate Glubish, with the first session scheduled Aug. 19 in Ponoka.

- Stanley Cup visits Leduc as Hurricanes forward Jordan Martinook brings trophy home. Martinook, a Leduc native and Carolina Hurricanes alternate captain, brought the Cup to the Leduc Recreation Centre after the Hurricanes’ Game 6 win over the Vegas Golden Knights; hundreds of fans lined up for photos and to touch the trophy. The Cup arrived at Edmonton International Airport Tuesday and received an RCMP escort to Leduc.
- Westlock County farming initiative aims to empower newcomers and boost local food supply. The community farming project in Westlock County is designed to provide newcomers opportunities to farm and to help feed the community, with organizers describing ambitions to support local food security and newcomer integration through shared agricultural programs.

- Kids Help Phone reports 183% more overnight text support requests than daytime. The service said texts from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. ET are 183 per cent higher than daytime volumes and overnight requests rose 24% in the first half of this year versus last; CEO Rebecca Shields said Kids Help Phone receives a crisis text every 90 seconds and listed depression, hopelessness and relationship issues among top concerns.
- Contaminated surgical tools were found in a Grande Prairie operating room in April, AHS records show. Alberta Health Services records indicate contaminated instruments were discovered during an April operating-room event in Grande Prairie; the disclosure appears in AHS documentation reviewed by Global News.
