RCMP say remains of 12-year-old Edmonton boy found north of Athabasca were ruled a homicide. Mounties identified the victim as Fiasal Hussein after remains were found near Calling Lake on Aug. 6 and an autopsy at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton ruled the death a homicide; Athabasca RCMP ask anyone with dash-cam video from Highway 813/C‑Road between 12 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 6 to call (780) 675-4252.

Woman pleads guilty to manslaughter in Edmonton fentanyl overdose death from Dec. 22, 2022. Court heard Joseph Mercier, 60, died after receiving an injection containing about 1 gram of fentanyl and 1.5 grams of cocaine; Morgan Churchill, 41, pleaded guilty after an undercover 2025 “Mr. Big” operation (Operation Hinder) led to her arrest in March 2025.

Calgary police issued and later cleared a dangerous-person alert after a reported shooting near Edworthy Park. The alert went out shortly after noon on Monday and was cancelled about 50 minutes later; police said several park areas would remain closed while officers continued to investigate.

Calgary police officer charged with two counts of second-degree murder appeared for the start of a preliminary hearing. Const. Craig Stothard faces charges related to a May 2023 slow-speed pursuit and shooting that left Levon Fox, 39, and Wesley Davidson, 46, dead, and the hearing is under a publication ban.

Westrich Pacific won court approval to buy and redevelop Edmonton City Centre on Aug. 7. The purchase from Otera Capital covers about 10 acres between 100 and 103 Streets and nearly 1.4 million sq ft of office and mall space, including TD Tower, Oxford Tower and Centre Point Place, plus four parking areas totalling 2,500 stalls; the developer plans phased work including about 1,500 residential units in the first phase.

Rollie Miles Park rec centre project remains unfunded after a City committee update. The preliminary model for 10450 72 Ave. in Queen Alexandra includes a pool and gym but the City said the roughly $130 million suggested cost would consume about 10% of Edmonton’s capital budget over the next four years, and Mayor Andrew Knack said immediate priorities mean the project stays on hold.

Alberta to review Amber Alert criteria and day-home policies after Calgary boy’s death, province says. Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis said the review will include police and disability advocates following the death of 11‑year‑old Parker Wells, whose body was found July 29 under Deerfoot Trail, and Calgary police will also review their response.
