1. 80-year-old woman dies while fleeing aggressive Bald Range wildfire near Summerland. The Bald Range fire, which sparked Friday night, is estimated at 13,618.2 hectares and has prompted five evacuation orders and four evacuation alerts; the BC Coroner’s Service is investigating the death and Penticton RCMP say homes and structures have been destroyed.
2. B.C. declares province-wide state of emergency as wildfires spread. The declaration covers the province after more than 100 wildfires were reported and nearly half were described as burning out of control, with one fire forcing nearly 25,000 people to flee across two communities east of Vancouver.

1. Union of BC Indian Chiefs urges Ottawa and Alberta to halt West Coast pipeline advancement. The letter, signed by Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and other chiefs, was sent to Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and argues expansion would worsen wildfires, floods and sea-rise impacts; B.C. 2. Feds approve assistance to provide shelter and accommodations for B.C. fire evacuees. Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski directed federal officials to work with the province on shelter support after evacuees from Summerland, the RDOS and Penticton Indian Band sought space at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre; one evacuee reported waiting 14 hours to register.
3. Tainted-evidence ruling leads to acquittal in B.C. murder trial, leaving family shocked. A judge excluded a confession and other statements after finding custodial conditions “oppressive” and “humiliating,” including an undercover officer urinating on himself while posing as the accused’s cellmate; the verdict in Chilliwack set aside Crown evidence from the July 20 hearing.
