- Peel Regional Police arrested a 43-year-old man, Arsalan Chaudhary, at Toronto Pearson after a flight from Dubai as part of Project 24K. Allegations: theft of more than $20 million in gold bars. Charges: theft over $5,000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. Chaudhary appeared at Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton and was held for bail.

- On the 4th anniversary (Jan. 12) of Elnaz Hajtamiri’s abduction from Wasaga Beach (Jan. 12, 2022), OPP say probe identifies potential ties to Quebec, Timmins, the GTA and the United Arab Emirates. She was taken by three suspects in fake police gear; vehicle described as a white Lexus RX. Multiple arrests have been made but Hajtamiri remains missing.
- Ontario says flu season peaked over holidays
- Health Minister Sylvia Jones said flu activity appeared to peak over the Christmas holidays and strained hospitals. She declined to explain why the province’s chief medical officer was not asked to hold a public briefing as cases rose.
