- Ontario is investing $55.8 million to plan York University’s new medical school. The province says the school will open in 2028 with 80 undergraduate and 102 postgraduate positions, eventually growing to 240 undergrad and 293 postgrad seats; the funding covers accreditation, curriculum, faculty recruitment and operating costs.
- Ontario reports 80 wildfires extinguished but 159 still burning, 30 out of control. - Toronto Public Health confirmed the city’s first human West Nile case this year in an adult resident. The announcement follows West Nile–positive mosquito pools in Toronto, Windsor-Essex, Belleville, York and Halton; symptoms typically appear two to 14 days after a bite and older adults face higher risk of severe illness.

- OPP seized about 930 grams of suspected fentanyl and 415 grams of suspected cocaine in a trafficking probe. Investigators arrested one person in Toronto on July 27 and executed warrants in Toronto and Curve Lake, recovering 19,450 suspected opioid tablets, about $67,000 cash, a shotgun, cellphones and estimating a street value over $231,000; three people face trafficking charges.
- Ottawa police say a woman pushing a stroller was sexually assaulted by a knife-wielding man. The incident was reported to Ottawa police and is under active investigation, with public safety messaging issued by the service.

- Les Grands Feux returns to Ottawa–Gatineau starting Wednesday night for its annual fireworks festival. The multi-night event will light the region’s skies beginning Wednesday, with organizers scheduling displays and associated downtown activities for attendees.
