Ford vs Feds, Alexander Joins Mayoral Race & Major Exploitation Charges — Toronto Wednesday

25 articles 2 hours ago 5

🏛️ Government & Politics

  1. Ontario threatens to withdraw support for federal ALTO high-speed rail after feds block Billy Bishop expansion. Premier Doug Ford's government reacted after Federal Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said Ottawa will not pursue Toronto Island airport expansion; 11 PC MPPs from eastern Ontario publicly questioned ALTO and said “too many questions remain unanswered.” The dispute followed media reports of an informal Ford–Carney deal and places provincial support for ALTO at risk while consultations continue.

  2. Former federal cabinet minister Chris Alexander is entering Toronto's mayoral race for the Oct. 26 election. Alexander registered his campaign Wednesday, pledging to address transit, housing and the economy; campaign spokesman Wilf Dinnick confirmed the registration. Alexander served as MP for Ajax–Pickering, was a Conservative cabinet minister and spent 18 years as a diplomat, including posting as Canada’s ambassador to Afghanistan.

  3. Mississauga council unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on hyperscale AI data centres. The council paused approvals after a proposed 50–100 megawatt site near Tenth Line West and Argentia Road — under 300 metres from homes — raised concerns about power, noise and water use. Mayor Carolyn Parrish did not vote; councillors passed the moratorium unanimously, leaving the fate of the specific project unclear.

🚨 Crime & Public Safety

  1. Toronto man Metin Ugur faces 68 charges in a multi-country child-exploitation probe. Toronto police allege Ugur, 57, used fake online identities across Snapchat, Discord, Instagram, TikTok and Fortnite to exploit children; investigators seized devices April 16 near Broadview and Danforth and later added 61 charges after identifying 13 more victims. Alleged victims are believed to live in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, the U.S., Australia, Scotland and England.

  2. Two GTA men charged with trafficking youth and multiple drug offences; police suspect more victims. Hamilton investigators allege 27‑year‑old Shemar Walters of Toronto trafficked youth and advertised sexual services between March and June; 20‑year‑old Ethan Gangasingh of Brampton is accused of assisting procurement. Both face counts including trafficking persons under 18 and possession for the purpose of trafficking; Hamilton police urge additional survivors to contact 905‑546‑3828.

  3. York Regional Police found no grounds for criminal charges against Durham officers in courthouse assault probe. York Regional Police investigated the Jan. 23 Oshawa courthouse incident involving lawyer Sudine Riley and concluded no criminal charges are warranted; Durham Regional Police has now referred the matter to the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency to assess possible misconduct. Riley had alleged officers slammed her head on a desk and ripped off her headscarf.

🎨 Community & Culture

  1. BTS will play in Toronto for the first time in a decade; Rogers Stadium is prepping for the concert. Organizers say the group’s return required venue adjustments at Rogers Stadium ahead of the August shows; the report highlights logistics for crowd management and stage setup as the band prepares for Canadian dates. The performances mark a major cultural event for Toronto this summer.

  2. CNE received nearly 50,000 job applications ahead of Wednesday’s job fair at Enercare Centre. The Canadian National Exhibition is hiring hundreds of seasonal roles across vendors and partners, with some positions extending beyond the fair’s Aug. 21–Sept. 7 run; Greater Toronto Area youth unemployment hit nearly 17% in April, the CNE noted.
