- More than 180 wildfires are active in northern Ontario, burning over 7,250 sq km so far. The Ministry of Natural Resources listed 180+ active fires this morning, including 12 started in the past 24 hours, and said more than 1,800 people were evacuated with 12 of 13 evacuated communities being First Nations.
- Northern couple who returned during an evacuation may face fines after trying to save their Upsala lodge. Jenny and Kevin VanderHooft say Open Bay Lodge burned on July 14 after they reported smoke on July 12; the MNR warned the couple they may be fined for flying a drone inside a Fort Frances 14 perimeter and for returning during an evacuation order.
- Ontario firefighters warned for years about retention and pay shortfalls before this record season. Internal reports from 2016–2022 flagged quitting, low experience and underpaying; the OPSOEU and retired officials say preparedness funding and permanent roles were repeatedly recommended as fires ravaged hundreds of thousands of hectares.

- PC caucus was told MPPs could use downtown hotels for night sittings despite Ford calling expenses "unacceptable." An email from the PC whip’s office in late 2025 advised booking downtown hotels for night sittings; former minister Stan Cho repaid $16,000 and three Peel MPPs repaid about $50,000 combined, Premier Doug Ford publicly called the charges "unacceptable."
- Owners of the former GM site appealed St. Catharines' repair-or-demolish orders to Ontario Superior Court. Numbered company 2390541 Ontario Inc. filed a notice of appeal on July 14 seeking to set aside property standards orders for 282 and 285 Ontario St., or extend compliance to June 30, 2027 instead of the committee’s Oct. 23, 2026 deadline.
- West Nile virus detected in mosquito pools across Ontario, including Markham and Halton, but no recent local human cases reported. Toronto, Windsor-Essex, Belleville, York Region (two traps and two pools in Markham) and Halton (two pools) reported positive mosquito pools; 14 dead wild birds tested positive in Canada, 13 of them in Ontario.
🚨 Crime & Public Safety
- Ottawa police say two boys, ages 7 and 12, were killed by their father in a murder-suicide investigation. Investigators concluded 40-year-old Mohammed Al-Lami acted alone after picking up the boys for parenting time on June 27; the father later set fire to his Iroquois dental practice and died by suicide near Kemptville, police said the boys were likely killed late June 28 or early June 29.
- York Regional Police arrested six and seized cocaine, firearms and $66,000 in Project Blade. Warrants executed July 16 in Aurora, Vaughan and Toronto recovered 28 ounces of cocaine (estimated street value >$24,000), four firearms, a replica firearm, a vehicle, a motorcycle and about $66,000; three face weapons charges and three face drug-trafficking charges.
- Peel police charged two alleged MS-13 members with human trafficking after Project Mermaid. Marcos Ariel Marinoni, 42, and Carlos Gutierrez, 30, were charged with trafficking in persons and related offences after warrants in Mississauga and Collingwood; both are in custody and investigators believe there may be additional victims.
