🚑 Breaking & Incidents

1. More than 180 wildfires remain active across northern Ontario. Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources listed 180+ active fires on Tuesday, with early estimates showing more than 7,250 sq km burned this season and over 1,800 people evacuated, including residents of 12 First Nations communities.
2. Northern Ontario couple may face fines after returning to evacuated property and flying a drone. Jenny and Kevin VanderHooft of Open Bay Lodge in Upsala returned to their resort during an evacuation after their lodge burned July 14; Ontario’s MNR warned about drone footage taken inside a fire perimeter and flagged possible fines.

🚨 Crime & Public Safety

1. Thirteen people accused in ‘Project South’ moved toward direct indictments in Superior Court. Crown lead Samuel Walker told Justice Catherine Rhinelander on Tuesday that eight indictments are before the court, seven accused are current or former Toronto police officers and Feb. 4, 2026 was the takedown date for arrests; one accused, Derek McCormick, pleaded guilty in Ontario Court of Justice.
2. York Regional Police dismantled an alleged GTA drug and gun trafficking network with six arrests. Project Blade led to July 16 search warrants in Aurora, Vaughan and Toronto, netting 28 ounces of cocaine (~$24,000 street value), four firearms, a replica firearm, a motorcycle, a vehicle and about $66,000 in cash; three accused face weapons offences and three face drug charges.
3. Toronto man charged with terrorism over alleged links to Hamas after protest speeches. Ahmad Hassan Hajahmad, 33, was arrested following a joint Toronto police and RCMP probe and faces one count of participating in activities of a terrorist group after statements at downtown protests between May 25 and Sept. 7, 2024; the Ontario and federal attorneys general approved the charge on July 20.

1. Province warned of wildland firefighter retention and pay problems for years before record fire season. Internal reports from 2016, 2018, 2019 and a 2022 memo raised concerns about quit rates and pay; the Ontario Public Service Employees Union has pushed to reclassify wildland firefighters and seek higher pay amid 2026’s record-burning season.
2. PC caucus told MPPs to use downtown hotel rooms for night sittings despite public criticism. An email from the PC whip’s office in late 2025 advised members without Toronto accommodation allowances to book hotels for night sittings, even as Premier Doug Ford publicly called the hotel charges “unacceptable" and MPPs agreed to repay some bills.

1. West Nile–positive mosquito pools detected across the GTA and southern Ontario. Toronto Public Health confirmed one positive mosquito batch this season, while York Region reported two positive traps and two pools in Markham; Ontario regions including Windsor-Essex, Belleville and Halton also reported positive pools and 13 dead wild birds in Ontario tested positive for the virus.
2. Canadian Blood Services reports a 20% drop in donation supply and urgent appointment gaps. Donor bookings have fallen by about 1,500–2,500 weekly since June 1, 2026; CBS says Canada needs roughly 18,000 weekly booked appointments and warned limited days-on-hand for several blood types could become unsustainable.
