Hundreds evacuated as 136 wildfires burn in northwestern Ontario. Ontario reported 136 active wildfires in the northwest as of 8 p.m. Wednesday, with 63 listed as out of control; mandatory evacuations are in place for Armstrong, Whitesand First Nation, Collins First Nation, Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation (Lac La Croix FN) and Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation, and Highway 599 and Highway 527 have full closures except for some local evacuation traffic.

Lodge owner near Upsala narrowly escapes as fires destroy neighbouring resorts. Rylie Isaacs Laforge of Lac Des Mille Lodge, about 160 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay, reported a wildfire June 30 and says the fire reached the edge of her campground, burning campers while her lodge survived; Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources data showed 129 active wildfires in the northwest region with 62 not under control at one reporting time.

Ontario formally requested federal and military help for wildfire evacuations. Minister of Emergency Preparedness Jill Dunlop said the province sent a formal Request for Assistance to the federal government to “expedite the deployment of federal resources,” including possible Canadian Armed Forces support, as Ontario recorded 482 fires so far this year compared with 362 at the same time last year.

Premier Doug Ford addresses hotel-expense scandal and vows repayments. Ford said MPPs who charged hotel stays will “pay back the money,” after the Ontario NDP revealed 20 PC MPPs billed $120,000 for downtown Toronto hotel rooms despite living within 50 kilometres of Queen’s Park; Tourism Minister Stan Cho was reported to have billed more than $16,000.

Ontario woman pleads guilty in $265,330 Taylor Swift ticket scam. Denise Tisor and a partner admitted defrauding 107 victims of a total $265,330 by claiming access to Rogers Centre tickets for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in November 2024; police found the alleged Rogers contact had no involvement, according to the agreed statement of facts.

Halton police seize $5M in cocaine and meth, largest meth bust in service history. Project Jester led to seizures of 20 kg of cocaine and 273 kg of methamphetamine after traffic stops in March and May and a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant at a Brampton commercial building; police estimate a combined street value of $5 million.
