Auston Matthews named NHL third star of the week — Sports Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs) was named the NHL's third star after breaking Mats Sundin's franchise goals record. On Jan. 3 he scored twice in the second period of a 4-3 OT loss to the New York Islanders: the first goal tied Sundin's mark at 420, the second made it 421. He also recorded a hat trick in a 6-5 win over Winnipeg last Thursday. Other weekly stars: Nikita Kucherov (Tampa Bay) — first star, Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh) — second star.

Downtown assault: suspect charged with manslaughter — Crime Toronto Police say a 34‑year‑old man died after a Dec. 28 dispute near Front St. W. and University Ave. At about 1:20 a.m. officers responded to a medical complaint. Investigators allege a verbal fight turned physical; the victim was assaulted, fell, got up and was assaulted again before losing consciousness. He was taken to hospital and placed on life support; he died several days later (reported on New Year’s Eve). A suspect fled the scene; charges of manslaughter have been laid.

Chrystia Freeland to resign as MP, join Zelenskyy as economic adviser — Politics Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland (University–Rosedale) announced she will step down from Parliament in the coming weeks to accept an unpaid advisory role to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She will also step aside as Canada’s special envoy for Ukraine reconstruction.

Snowfall warning for Toronto and GTA — Weather Environment Canada issued a "yellow" snowfall warning: up to 10 centimetres expected in Toronto, timing likely to disrupt Monday morning commute. Snow should taper off by afternoon. Warning extends west toward Georgian Bay and Lake Huron, where amounts may be higher.

Man shot dead on bus at Yorkdale GO terminal — Crime Police responded around 7:00 p.m. Sunday to the Yorkdale GO bus terminal. A man was found with gunshot wounds and later died. A male suspect was arrested and a firearm recovered; police say there are no outstanding suspects. No victim ID released pending next‑of‑kin notification.
