Biting cold returns to Ontario — After a brief warm spell, temperatures plunged overnight into Sunday and Environment Canada warned wind chills could feel as low as −24°C early Monday (other parts of southern Ontario saw lows in the −20s and wind chills to −30°C, while Thunder Bay dipped into the −30s with wind chill near −40°C). Snow isn’t likely in Toronto and the extreme cold should be short-lived, with above-zero temperatures expected to return to many areas by Tuesday.

Mixed emotions among Iranian Canadians after strikes on Iran — Over the weekend (strikes began Saturday morning), rallies took place in Canadian cities with some, like Sedi Minachi in Vancouver, celebrating and others, like Mona Ghassemi of the Iranian Canadian Congress, warning about foreign intervention; U.S. President Donald Trump said the operation aimed to stop Iran getting a nuclear weapon and later said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed, a claim state media then confirmed. The story also notes heavy protest casualties at home (Iran’s government says more than 3,000 killed since the unrest began; the U.S.-based HRANA group estimates more than 7,000), and recalls large demonstrations in Canada including hundreds of thousands marching in Toronto on Feb. 14.

Leafs ‘embarrassed’ after 5–2 loss to Senators — On Saturday (report published March 1, 2026) Ottawa beat Toronto 5–2 as Auston Matthews called the performance “embarrassing”; Drake Batherson and Dylan Cozens each scored twice and the Senators improved to 29–22–8 while the Maple Leafs fell to 27–24–9 and have lost three straight. With Toronto eight points out of a wild-card spot, three games before the trade deadline (starting Monday vs. the Philadelphia Flyers), coach Craig Berube and players say they need more pride and urgency on the ice.
