Calgary liquidation-centre blaze, Wainwright vigil & Smith faces questions — Calgary Wednesday

23 articles 1 hour ago 0

🚑 Breaking & Incidents

  1. Fire damaged one unit of a southeast Calgary liquidation centre after flames spread from outdoor furniture. Calgary Fire Department crews were called to the 100 block of Forge Road SE in Fairview around 3 a.m.; Battalion Chief Shane Pascoe said crews conducted an aggressive interior attack, contained the blaze to one source and will keep the directly affected unit closed for some time. No injuries were reported; crews will monitor for hotspots throughout the day.
  2. Vigil planned in Wainwright after training fire killed four soldiers and left 27 hospitalized. Churches in the town of roughly 7,000 are hosting a Wednesday night vigil; the four dead were identified as Pte. Shaun Farrell, 23; Pte. Aidan Goulding, 23; Pte. Hayden Lykkemark, 19; and Sgt. Morgan Wong, 26, while Premier Danielle Smith said 27 soldiers remain hospitalized receiving the “highest level of care.”

🎨 Community & Culture

  1. Quebec duo Angine de Poitrine will stop in Calgary on a 2027 world tour starting March 4. The tour opens March 4 in Melbourne and includes eight Canadian dates listed by the band, including Calgary, Ottawa and Winnipeg; the act won the $30,000 Polaris Music Prize and the $10,000 SOCAN Polaris Song Prize in September for their album “Vol. II” and the track “Fabienk.”
  2. First Nations reported ballot shortages at polling stations during Alberta’s referendum, including Siksika Nation. First Nations organizers said many stations had to request more ballots, and Siksika Nation reported understaffing and long wait times during Monday’s vote where about three in four Albertans voted to remain in Confederation according to preliminary results.
  3. A record $90 million Lotto Max jackpot was won in Alberta after Tuesday’s draw, OLG says. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation said the $90 million jackpot landed in Alberta following Tuesday night’s draw; OLG also reported three $1-million MaxMillion prizes sold in Brant County, Toronto and online, and multiple MaxPlus prizes sold in Ontario.

🏛️ Government & Politics

  1. Prime Minister Mark Carney did not rule out an Alberta immigration deal like Quebec’s 1991 accord. Carney told reporters “We’ll see” in French during a Parliament Hill exchange and spoke in Calgary on Wednesday; he noted Quebec’s 1991 agreement lets the province set its own economic immigration targets and said Ottawa will talk with other provinces about levels. More than one million Albertans voted on a referendum question about provincial control, with preliminary results showing about 53% voting yes on changing immigration powers.
  2. Premier Danielle Smith will take questions Wednesday after Albertans voted overwhelmingly to stay Canadian. Smith said she voted to remain in Canada and told viewers in a provincewide address that separation is “dead” while she is premier; preliminary counts showed about three-quarters of voters chose to stay in Confederation rather than hold a binding second referendum.

🏈 Sports

  1. Calgary Stampeders’ playoff fate hinges on Winnipeg–B.C. result with one regular-season game left for rivals. Calgary (9-9) finished its regular season on a bye and sits third in the West on tiebreakers; Winnipeg (8-9) faces B.C. (10-7) Friday and needs a win to clinch and eliminate Calgary from the postseason, while a Lions victory would put the Stampeders into the playoffs.
  2. Evan Bouchard scored an overtime winner as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Minnesota Wild 4-3. Bouchard’s OT goal was his seventh of the season and came with 1:28 remaining in overtime on his 27th birthday; the Oilers improved to 7-1-1 while Connor McDavid recorded three assists for 26 points in nine games.
