🚑 Breaking & Incidents

  1. Deadly chain-reaction crash in Calgary involved a compressed natural gas transit bus. The Thursday crash killed three people and injured more than a dozen after a transit bus hit several vehicles and ignited; Calgary police said one officer was hospitalized after running toward a bus as fire erupted. CUTRIC reports 958 compressed natural gas buses operate in Ontario, Alberta and B.C., and experts call the technology "extremely safe."
  2. Major fire and explosions at CFB Wainwright have caused deaths and injuries. Minister of National Defence David McGuinty said people have died and been injured after an incident at the base about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton; Acute Care Alberta reported EMS are on scene providing care and transport, and officials say the fire spread due to high winds.

🏈 Sports

  1. Calgary Stampeders beat B.C. Lions 32-13 but still await playoff fate. The Stampeders improved to 9-9 with Saturday’s win but must depend on B.C. (10-7) beating Winnipeg (8-9) next Friday to reach the postseason; Vernon Adams Jr. acknowledged the team has "zero influence" over their fate during the season-ending bye week.
  2. Edmonton Elks clinch West Division and will host the CFL West final Nov. 7. The Elks moved to 13-4 after a 35-27 win over Winnipeg; quarterback Cody Fajardo ran and passed for two touchdowns and Edmonton will host the division final with the winner advancing to the Grey Cup on Nov. 15 in Calgary.

🏛️ Government & Politics

  1. Alberta referendum Monday will ask whether to stay in Canada or hold another binding separation referendum. Premier Danielle Smith has said a vote to stay would require people to "accept it and move on," while experts warn western alienation may persist even if the referendum fails; the question could alter long-term provincial politics.
  2. Voters will also answer five provincial immigration questions on Monday, including provincial control over economic immigration. The questions include whether provincially funded services should be limited to citizens and permanent residents, and whether non-permanent residents should pay fees for health care and education.
  3. Two Yellowknife RCMP officers face criminal negligence causing death charges after a 2025 in-custody death. Alberta RCMP investigators say the charges stem from March 2025 when officers left a 56-year-old man, Lawrence Blackduck, inside a police vehicle and later found him unresponsive; the RCMP says it has revised in-vehicle detention policy and training.
