  1. Small aircraft crashed into a field north of Guelph and caught fire. Ontario Provincial Police say crews responded at 10:15 a.m. near Beatty Line and Wellington Road 17 in Fergus, Transport Canada has been notified, and police warned drivers to avoid the area as the crash remains under investigation.
  2. Lockdown and two hold-and-secure orders lifted at three Oshawa schools. Durham police reported officers on scene around 10:45 a.m. at Paul Dwyer Catholic High School after a threat; Adelaide McLaughlin Public School and R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate were placed on hold-and-secure and all measures were lifted by about 11:30 a.m.

  1. 30-year-old charged with second-degree murder after Port Colborne shooting. Niagara police say a 31-year-old Niagara Falls man was pronounced dead on Fares Street and a 30-year-old Port Colborne man was arrested and charged; investigators describe the incident as isolated and are asking the public for information.
  2. SIU clears Toronto officers who shot suspect linked to Const. Marc Pinizzotto’s death. The Special Investigations Unit director Joseph Martino concluded officers had “no alternative” but to use lethal force during a June 11 Emergency Task Force raid in North York; 19-year-old Nicholas Bennett was shot, taken to hospital and later charged with first-degree murder.

  1. Ontario Court of Appeal revives challenge to Hamilton’s anti-encampment bylaw. A unanimous panel found the trial judge relied on stereotypes about homeless residents and ordered a new trial to address whether the city’s ban on sleeping in parks is constitutional; the challenge was launched by 14 encampment residents.
  2. Halton police using U.S. AI simulation tech to recruit and train 911 call takers. Halton’s communications bureau manager Brian Dodd said GovWorx scenarios cut candidate evaluation time by 50 per cent and the force is the first Canadian agency to use the technology for hiring and ongoing training.
  3. Another beluga from Marineland died after relocation to Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. Shedd Aquarium reported Caspian, a 27-year-old female beluga, died Wednesday after being on life support for nearly four hours; she was one of 30 belugas relocated from Marineland this summer.

  1. Edmonton Elks clinched a home playoff game with a 27-12 win over Hamilton. The victory improved Edmonton to 12-4; Zach Mathis returned an interception 48 yards for a TD and Vincent Blanchard’s earlier nine-field-goal game was noted from Sept. 26.

  1. Senators forward William Eklund out for an extended period with an ankle injury. Coach Travis Green said Eklund left Ottawa’s 2-1 win over Philadelphia after a hit from Simon Benoit, has one goal and one assist in four games this season, and is expected to return before season’s end without surgery.
