Explosions à Hamilton, gel d'OSAP et mises à pied chez Stelco — Ottawa jeudi

🚑 Breaking & Incidents

  1. Deux explosions présumées dans des maisons à Hamilton envoient trois personnes à l'hôpital. La première détonation au 182, Springside Drive peu après 7 h 30 a fait exploser un garage, entraîné l'effondrement de la maison et provoqué de graves brûlures chez une personne; deux maisons voisines ont été fortement endommagées, a déclaré le chef des pompiers David Cunliffe. Une seconde explosion au 8, Lampton Place vers 9 h a soulevé un important panache de fumée et deux résidents ont été secourus par des voisins; le Bureau du commissaire aux incendies enquête.
  2. L'agent de Belleville blessé lors d'une attaque à la synagogue « s'améliore chaque jour », dit la police. Le chef Murray Rodd a rapporté que le constable Jeff Smith a subi plusieurs opérations et progresse régulièrement après avoir été blessé par balle lors de l'attaque du 20 septembre devant la synagogue Sons of Jacob; l'auteur des tirs, Sean Ward, est décédé à l'hôpital le lendemain.

🏛️ Government & Politics

  1. L'Ontario suspend l'admissibilité à OSAP pour plus de 500 collèges privés de carrière. Le gouvernement Ford a suspendu l'admissibilité aux prêts et subventions pour plus de 500 établissements (737 campus) après avoir signalé des irrégularités dans six collèges et au milieu d'une possible enquête criminelle de l'OPP, laissant étudiants et établissements inquiets quant à l'accès au financement, a indiqué le ministère.
  2. L'Ontario restreint le financement des médicaments à l'étranger après un blâme judiciaire. Après qu'une Cour divisionnaire a ordonné à l'Assurance-santé de l'Ontario de réexaminer la demande de traitement aux États-Unis d'une patiente en mélanome de stade 4, la ministre de la Santé, Sylvia Jones, a modifié les règlements pour n'autoriser le financement hors du pays que lorsque le médicament est déjà financé provincialement mais temporairement indisponible ou retardé.
  3. Alto reporte à l'hiver 2027 sa décision sur un arrêt à Kingston pour le corridor Ottawa–Montréal. Le président d'Alto, Robert Prichard, a décrit Kingston comme « prometteur » mais a précisé qu'une étude de faisabilité est nécessaire; Alto a officiellement annoncé seulement Peterborough et privilégiera le corridor Ottawa–Montréal tout en évaluant l'impact de chaque arrêt supplémentaire sur la durée du trajet et la fréquentation.
  4. Le conseil de Hamilton appuie un projet pilote visant à obliger les propriétaires à maintenir au moins une pièce sous 26 °C. Les conseillers ont approuvé un projet pilote dans le quartier 2 rendant les propriétaires responsables du maintien d'un seuil de 26 °C reconnu par Santé Canada dans une pièce par logement; le personnel municipal fera rapport avec des recommandations, et le projet pilote vise à éclairer une approche à l'échelle de la ville d'ici le début 2029.

  1. Stelco commence à délivrer des avis de mise à pied alors que jusqu'à 500 suppressions d'emplois se profilent. Le président du local 1005 des United Steelworkers, Ron Wells, a déclaré qu'environ 90 travailleurs ont reçu des avis cette semaine et qu'environ 330 employés syndiqués de l'usine de Hamilton sont menacés de mises à pied à partir de dimanche alors que les opérations sont adaptées pour l'hiver; l'entreprise qualifie ces mesures de mises à pied indéfinies tandis que le syndicat les considère temporaires.
  2. (Décision provinciale liée) L'Ontario précise les règles de financement de médicaments à l'étranger après un différend sur un traitement coûteux. À la suite du recours judiciaire d'Alex Shved concernant une thérapie par lymphocytes infiltrant la tumeur aux États-Unis évaluée à environ 600 000 $, la province a resserré les règlements pour limiter le financement hors du pays aux médicaments déjà financés en Ontario mais temporairement indisponibles.
