- Police investigating linked assaults where Grindr was used to lure victims in North Vancouver. RCMP say two reported incidents occurred on Aug. 27 and Aug. 31 and investigators found CCTV suggesting a likely third assault on Aug. 29 near Ross Road Elementary; police are seeking witnesses and anyone with video to contact North Vancouver RCMP.
- Five foreign nationals charged in B.C. extortion-related investigation that included arson and shootings. Langley RCMP say Project E_PURSUANCE began after an extortion report in June 2025; arrests were made in Surrey and at Toronto Pearson, and police seized firearms plus suspected cocaine, fentanyl and opium.
- Man re-arrested after allegedly returning to same Save-On-Foods linked to violent Sept. 19 assault in Victoria. Peter Andrew Patrick Statham, 27, faces charges of theft, assault causing bodily harm and robbery in the Sept. 19 attack that hospitalized a store manager with a cracked cheekbone; he remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
- Police seeking witnesses to CRAB Park homicide. Vancouver Police Department has asked the public for help in the investigation into a stabbing death at CRAB Park; authorities have released appeals for information and any video or tips that could identify suspects.
- VPD ticket blitz finds most e-scooter riders in Vancouver aren’t wearing helmets. Since Sept. 4 police issued 1,226 tickets to e-scooter riders and stopped 920 riders without helmets; of those 920, officers issued 167 tickets and 753 warnings, while sidewalk riding and double-riding also drew tickets and warnings.
🏈 Sports
- Leevi Merilainen steps in and wins in his Vancouver Canucks debut, making 23 saves in 4-1 victory. Claimed off waivers from Ottawa at age 24, Merilainen earned praise from coach Manny Malhotra after stopping key chances including a late 3-on-1, as the Canucks scored four third-period goals for their second win of the season.
- Edmonton Oilers beat Seattle 3-1 as Connor McDavid reaches nine points in three games. McDavid had a goal and an assist to give him nine points through three games, while Leon Draisaitl scored and Owen Michaels added a goal in Edmonton's second straight win to open the season 2-0-1.
- Canucks and Oilers learning from two wild early-season games that produced a 9-7 Oilers win and a 6-5 Canucks OT win. Both teams cited defensive lessons after the high-scoring pair of games that yielded three of four possible points for Edmonton and provided examples of areas to improve early in the NHL season.

- B.C. NDP leader David Eby pledges new tax bracket on million-dollar earners to fund health care if re-elected. Eby announced the proposal while campaigning in Comox ahead of the Oct. 24 provincial election and said he will share more details at a Victoria campaign stop.
- BC NDP unveils plan to cap grocery profit margins and boost pricing transparency. Speaking in Kelowna on day 11 of the campaign, Eby proposed price guards for milk, eggs, cheese, butter and poultry, temporary fuel-tax relief and longer-term measures including an independent Lower Mainland food terminal.
- Candidates finalized for B.C.’s Oct. 24 snap provincial election. Party lists and riding candidates have been set ahead of the Oct. 24 vote called this campaign season, with parties campaigning across southern B.C. and Vancouver-area ridings.
💼 Economy & Business
- LNG Canada to use Chinese steel on its $33-billion Kitimat expansion project. The project developer confirmed plans to source Chinese-made steel for the Kitimat expansion, a decision tied to procurement for the multi-billion-dollar LNG project in northern B.C.
- B.C. subjects tailoring services and most textiles to provincial sales tax. The province has changed PST rules to apply to tailoring services and most textile purchases, creating new tax obligations for clothing alterations and many textile sales.
🎨 Community & Culture
- Michael J. Fox, a Burnaby actor, promoted to companion level in the Order of Canada. The federal honour was upgraded for Fox in recognition of his career and advocacy, moving him to the Order’s highest designation for significant national contribution.
- Hagwilget raises a new totem pole for the first time in 85 years. The community celebrated the raising of a totem pole in Hagwilget, British Columbia, marking the first such event there in 85 years and a cultural milestone for the village.
- Ktunaxa father paddles across Canada–U.S. border in a recovery-related journey after losing his son to overdose. The man from Ktunaxa is undertaking the cross-border paddle as part of advocacy and personal recovery work following his son's death two decades earlier.
