The 30-year-old Toronto linebacker leads the league with 92 defensive tackles and 103 total tackles (11 on special teams) while Toronto sits 9-6 and has already clinched a home playoff game; the Argos host the B.C. Lions (8-6) on Saturday with Montreal able to clinch first place with a Toronto loss and a Montreal home win.

Tyson Philpot needs 135 receiving yards to break Terry Evanshen's 1967 Canadian single-season mark. Philpot, 26, leads the CFL with 1,528 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns through 14 games and will chase the 1,662-yard record when Montreal hosts Winnipeg on Saturday night.

Kenny Lawler caught six passes for 132 yards and two TDs as Hamilton snapped a five-game skid. Lawler’s 34-16 Tiger-Cats win in Ottawa improved Hamilton to 5-11, and Lawler recorded his 400th CFL career reception and handed his jersey to his brother after the game.

High-scoring NHL openers left the Oilers 1-0-1 and the Canucks 1-1-0 after a 9-7 Oilers win. The two teams split a pair of wild games (Canucks won 6-5 in overtime in Edmonton; Oilers won 9-7 in Vancouver), and Oilers captain Connor McDavid noted the club collected three of four possible points over the two games.

Federal and Alberta leaders declared the million-barrel-per-day Pacific Link pipeline a project in the national interest. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the Pacific Link designation in Fort McMurray and said the Calgary-based major projects office will shepherd a streamlined review; Premier Danielle Smith joined Carney at the news conference as officials argued the oilsands may see “sustained growth” if companies invest.

Alberta separatist leaders say Ottawa’s pipeline move won’t change their push ahead of the Oct. 19 referendum. Cory Morgan, an organizer with the Pathway to Independence group, said the Pacific Link designation does not alter separatists’ aims as Albertans prepare to vote on whether to stay in Canada or trigger a second binding referendum on independence.

Const. Eli Ndatuje was found not guilty of all charges in Red Deer on Friday. Justice Jason Wilkins acquitted Ndatuje, 39, of Criminal Code and Security of Information Act charges after an investigation that used 20 to 30 officers, wiretaps and interviews following Ndatuje’s February 2024 arrest.
