Calgary Fire Chief Steve Dongworth says the ECCO Recycling blaze has an estimated volume of one million cubic metres and can cover up to eight CFL fields; crews have been battling it since Sept. 6 and expect smoke control within days but full mitigation could take weeks or months.
- Prairie harvests delayed by heavy rain; Alberta lags behind average. As of Sept. 8 Alberta had 21 per cent of crops harvested versus a five-year regional average that is higher; Saskatchewan reported only 32 per cent harvested compared with a 71 per cent average after widespread rainfall halted combines and left some fields waterlogged.

- Construction begins on $43-million Symons Valley Centre Library in northwest Calgary. City of Calgary and Calgary Public Library broke ground Wednesday on a 15,000 sq ft branch to replace a 1,700 sq ft temporary Sage Hill library; the project includes a multi-modal street, parking and is due for completion in mid-2028.
- Man sentenced to 12 years for sexual assaults near Calgary; credit applied for time served. Justice Judith Shriar imposed a 12-year sentence on Richard Robert Mantha, 62, convicted of six offences from 2019–2023; he received 5 years 3 months' credit for pre-trial custody, leaving just under seven years to serve.

- CFL hands Josh Haggerty a two-game suspension for striking Montreal RB Liam Talbot. The B.C. Lions defensive back received two games Thursday after Talbot required groin surgery and was placed on Montreal’s six-game injury list; Don Callis and Ronald Kent Jr. received one-game suspensions for related conduct.
