1. Ontario rental rules narrow tenant repayment windows to seven days. New provisions of the Residential Tenancies Act take effect Sept. 21 and let landlords issue an N4 giving tenants seven days to pay missed monthly or yearly rent, down from 14 days; “persistent” late payments are defined as three missed seven-day payments within six months, enabling L1 eviction filings.
2. Top Labour Ministry aide leaves days after David Piccini’s cabinet shuffle. The departure follows an auditor-general probe into a $2.5-billion skills development fund and an ongoing Integrity Commissioner ethics investigation into Piccini’s office; Piccini was moved to Infrastructure overseeing a $236-billion capital plan.
3. Ontario legislature stay extended until Oct. 27, shrinking fall sitting to 23 days. Premier Doug Ford pushed the return from Sept. 14 to Oct. 27 to avoid municipal elections, a change Opposition MPPs say cuts five weeks from the calendar and limits opportunities to hold government to account.
4. Most provinces report improved classroom focus after school cell-phone bans, Quebec remains strictest. Provinces vary policy but Quebec bans phones all day for all students; ministers report lower phone use and Nova Scotia found about seven per cent student phone use during class under its rules.

1. Gordie Howe bridge recorded more than 270,000 crossings in August. Statistics Canada says August was the bridge’s first full month with 270,000+ crossings, including 34,800 commercial trucks; Canada paid the $6.4-billion construction cost under a revenue-sharing deal with Michigan.
2. Metrolinx gave away roughly 1,000 limited-edition Lake Ontario PRESTO cards at Union Station. The cards read “Lake Ontario, Now and Always,” part of a customer engagement event tied to provincial messaging after U.S. renaming controversy.

1. Ottawa Senators signed Drake Batherson to an eight-year, US$10.75-million AAV extension. The 28-year-old winger’s deal runs through 2034-35; Batherson scored 33 goals and 71 points in 79 games last season and ranks 10th on the Senators’ all-time scoring list with 364 career points.
2. NHL drops mandatory fitness testing and trims exhibition schedule to four games.
